Buster Crabbe, Neville Brand

Chad Santee (Buster Crabbe) and Jubal Santee (Neville Brand) play a pair of brothers who are reunited after Chad's six year stint in the army. Crabbe has served in the cavalry while Brand claims he now has a ranch in the Wyoming territory. Crabbe hopes to partner up with his brother, but quickly realizes something is afoul: Brand is really an outlaw leader of a gang known as the Nighthawks, and cattle rustling is only one of their enterprises! Crabbe, though disappointed, won't rat his brother out to law enforcement. Things go south in a hurry though when Brand gets it in his head that his brother has betrayed him - which puts Crabbe in a highly vulnerable position with only sultry saloon singer Ann Robinson as a real ally!

Gun Brothers is a surprising B-Western that is thoroughly entertaining with an interesting plot and moves at a swift pace. The character development is what you'd expect from a western movie of this caliber, but great performances from Buster and Neville raise it above the standard fare. As usual, Buster Crabbe never misses an opportunity to take off his shirt and show off his build. He always kept himself in great shape, having been an Olympic athlete in the 1932 games. The scene in the saloon when he tries to impress Ann Robinson is hilarious. Crabbe is smacking his lips while drooling over her like a hungry schoolboy (can't blame him though as Robinson looks truly amazing here!). Aiding the stars are some welcome familiar faces: Michael Ansara as a mixed race outlaw and Brand's right hand is a villain without any redeemable qualities. One of the best to come along of that breed until Lee Marvin played the title role in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Roy Barcroft who was in about a gazillion westerns for Republic for once is on the side of the law as a sheriff. Slim Pickens has a small role as a fur trapper and Lita Milan who had one tempestuous marriage to Rory Calhoun plays an Indian maid who also falls for Crabbe while she's Ansara's property and I do mean property.
